The idea for this cute panda pencil case has been floating around in my head for more than a year. I’ve made one once before, as a gift, but I didn’t had the time to make decent step by step photographs back then. Since I’ve finally rediscovered my sewing machine I found it high time to make another one and to write a little tutorial.
Making the panda pencil case isn’t too hard, although using the hairy fleece makes it considerably harder. If you’ve never put in a zipper or sewn a little pouch before I suggest using white felt instead of fleece.
Materials:
- the pencil case pattern
- 2 pieces of fusible interfacing
- 2 pieces of cotton lining
- 2 pieces of fleece
- pieces of felt in different colours (I used white, black en pink felt)
- a zipper (22 cm)
Tip
If you’re zipper isn’t wide enough for this pouch, you can use a shorter one and stitch two pieces of fabric at each end. I used a second hand zipper which was too short. I took two small rectangles, folded them double and stitched them onto the zipper, in the crease of the fold.
Step-by-step
Put one of the two pieces of lining down with the print facing up. Put the zipper and the panda ears on top of it. Next, place a piece of fleece on top. If you’re fleece isn’t double sided, like mine, make sure the good side is facing down. Make sure the edges of the fabric, the zipper and the ears neatly line up. Sew the pieces together, as close to the zipper teeth as possible.
Pin the panda ears onto your fleece and put the other piece of fabric and fleece together, with the zipper in between, lining them up at the other side of the zipper. Sew the pieces together. When you’re finished, your pencil case looks like this:
Next up we’ll add the eyes , the mouth and the blush of the panda’s face. You could do this before you start sewing the pieces of the pencil case together, but I like to do it when the first pieces have been sewn together, because this way I’m sure the face will be straight and wont shift when I start sewing.
After placing the pieces on the fleece I pinned the black ovals in place and stitched around the edge with black thread. Next I added the whites of the eyes, which I also stitched in place. Afterwards I added the nose and the pink blushes. I stitched the blushes on manually, because I didn’t trust my sewing machine skills for such small pieces. Of course, you can sewn all the pieces by hand if you feel more comfortable this way.
We’re almost there! Place the pieces of fleece on top of each other at one side of the zipper and the pieces of lining at the other side of the zipper. Pin them, so the fabric wont shift when sewing. Definitely do this with the fleece, because it’s very stretchy and tend to not stay in place when sewing (even when pinned).
Sew the pieces of fleece together, starting at one end of the zipper, sewing along the edge to the other corner. Then sew around the pieces of lining in the same way, but make sure you leave an opening at the bottom of the lining, so you can turn the pencil case right side out.
After you’re finished sewing, turn the pencil case right side out and close the opening at the bottom of the pencil case with a slip stitch. If you’re not sure how to close the seam with a slip stitch, you can find a tutorial on using a slip stitch here.
Put the lining inside the pencil case, press the fabric in the corners and voila, you’re brand new, very hugable, pencil case is finished!

Het idee voor deze schattige panda pennenzak zweeft al meer dan een jaar rond in mijn hoofd. Ik maakte al eens eerder een panda pennenzak, als een cadeautje, maar ik had toen geen tijd om de stap-voor-stap foto’s te maken. Nu ik mijn naaimachine herontdekt heb, vond ik het ideale moment om mijn tutorial uit te werken en mijzelf een nieuwe pennenzak cadeau te doen.
Een panda pennenzak maken is helemaal niet zo moeilijk, maar wanneer je harige (dubbelzijdige) fleece gebruikt, zoals ik, wordt het wel een stuk moeilijker. Als je nog nooit een rits ingezet hebt of een nog nooit een klein zakje genaaid heb, zou ik aanraden om witte vilt te gebruiken in plaats van witte fleece.
Materialen:
- het patroon van de panda pennenzak
- 2 stukken vlieseline (even groot als de andere stukken voor de pennenzak)
- 2 stukken katoen voor de binnenkant van de pennenzak
- 2 stukken (harige) fleece voor de buitenkant van de pennenzak
- vilt in verschillende kleuren (ik gebruik wit, zwart en roze)ee
- een rits (22 cm)
Tip
Indien je, zoals ik, een rits hebt liggen die net te kort is voor je pennenzak, dan kan je deze ook gebruiken door een extra stukje stof aan iedere kant van de rits te naaien. Ik nam twee kleine rechthoekjes, vouwde die dubbel en stikte ze vast in de vouw.
Stap-voor-stap
Leg één van de stukjes katoen voor de binnenkant op de tafel, met de print naar boven. Leg de rits gelijk met de bovenste lange zijde van het stuk stof. Plaats de oortjes bovenop de rits. Hierna leg je het stuk vilt bovenop al de rest (het is eigenlijk een sandwich van stofjes). Stik nu de stofjes vast door aan de bovenkant van de rits, zo dicht mogelijk bij de tanden van de rits te stikken. Hiervoor gebruik je best je ritsvoetje.
Pin de panda oortjes vast aan het stuk fleece dat je net hebt vastgestikt. Herhaal het proces met het stukje katoen, de rits en de fleece nu opnieuw, aan de andere kant van de rits. Naai alles weer aan elkaar. Wanneer je hiermee klaar bent en je vouwt de stukken stof open, moet het er zo uit zien:
Nu gaan we de onderdelen van het gezicht vastmaken. Je zou dit kunnen doen vooraleer je de fleece aan de rits vastmaakt, maar ik doe het liever nadien, zodat je meer controle hebt over hoe recht de onderdelen uiteindelijk gaan hangen.
Plaats de onderdelen op de fleece en speld vast waar nodig. Ik naaide de zwarte ovalen, de witte stipjes in de ogen en het neusje met mijn naaimachine vast. De blosjes deed ik met de hand. Gebruik voor alles bijpassende draad voor het mooiste resultaat.
Nu zijn we er bijna! Plaats de twee lappen fleece op elkaar (met het gezichtje naar binnen). De rits en de stof voor de binnenzijde plaats je aan de andere kant. Speld alles vast, zodat het niet kan gaan schuiven tijdens het stikken.
Naai de stukken fleece aan elkaar. Begin hiervoor aan een kan van de rits en stik rondom rond de fleece. Stik een klein beetje over de rits. Doe dit nu ook aan de andere kant, met de stof voor de binnenkant. Let wel op! Hierbij moet je onderaan de voering een stukje open laten zodat je straks de pennenzak binnenstebuiten kan vouwen.
Wanneer je klaar bent met stikken, draai je de pennenzak binnenste buiten. Naai nu de opening aan de onderkant van de voering dicht. Hiervoor kan je een onzichtbare rijgsteek gebruiken.
Plaats de voering nu in de fleece en duw de hoekjes mooi naar buiten en voila, je bent klaar met het maken van een spliksplinternieuwe pennenzak met hoog knuffelgehalte!

I just bought red, black and white Shannon Cuddle fabric to make all three of my grandchildren a gift so now I hope there will be extra fabric left of the black and white so I will be able to make each of them one of these too.
